About Brush Filament Materials
 

There are primarily five types of abrasive filaments.

Standard grit sizes for diamond and silicon carbide:

24#, 36#, 46#, 60#, 80#, 120#, 180#, 240#, 320#, 400#, 600#, 800#, 1000#, 1200# (customization is also available upon request).

"Mesh count" primarily indicates the size of abrasive particles.

"Mesh" refers to the number of openings per square inch of a sieve; for instance, a 50-mesh rating means there are 50 openings per square inch, while a 500-mesh rating means there are 500. A higher mesh count indicates a greater number of openings. In addition to describing the sieve itself, the term also denotes the particle size of material capable of passing through the mesh: the higher the mesh count, the smaller the particle size.

 

Regarding bristle length:

The working length of the bristles extending from the surface is typically 30mm, though customization according to customer requirements is also available.

 

Regarding the method of securing the brush filaments:

Abrasive brushes are manufactured using one of two filament-securing methods—plastic insertion or stapling.

Bristle attachment method

In the glued-in version, workers manually secure the abrasive filaments to the plastic backing plate using adhesive. This process is more time-consuming, but it results in a denser, more uniform filament arrangement that completely fills each hole (utilizing a higher filament count); the brush offers a longer service life and superior pressure resistance due to the adhesive bonding.

 

In the stapled version, machines secure the filaments to the plastic backing plate. The surface filaments appear more dispersed and uneven in height, providing better contour-following capabilities that allow the brush to polish both high and low areas of the stone surface. Its pressure resistance is somewhat lower than that of the glued-in version.

Water supply operations:

Water must be applied during the polishing process. This serves two purposes: first, it prevents the brush filaments from deforming due to high temperatures; second, it washes away abraded stone particles and spent abrasive material, preventing accumulation that could scratch the surface.

 

Grinding sequence:

The grinding sequence proceeds from coarse to fine grits (e.g., the coarse series: 24#, 36#, 46#, 60#, 80#). The 24# brush contains the largest silicon carbide particles; as the grit number increases, the size of the silicon carbide particles within the filaments decreases, eventually becoming powder-like.

 

About Grit:

The 24#, 36#, and 46# brushes offer strong grinding power and high sharpness; they remove softer stone particles (creating depressions) while leaving harder particles intact (creating raised areas), thereby establishing the initial "antique" or "leather" finish (a textured, relief-like effect). The depth and scale of this texture are determined by the initial coarse grinding stages. Subsequent finer grits serve to remove the scratch marks left by the previous stages and to polish the surface, progressively refining the texture until the stone surface becomes smooth and detailed.

 

Brushing method:

Move at a constant speed in a grid-like (crisscross) pattern, covering the same area 2–3 times to avoid uneven texture caused by unidirectional sanding; do not remain stationary in one spot for an extended period.

 

Post-completion treatment:

Rinse the stone dust off the surface with clean water and allow it to dry before applying stone sealer; since antique finishes have higher porosity, a more thorough sealing treatment is recommended.

 

Storage and maintenance:

  • Store nylon brushes away from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent the bristles from melting due to high temperatures or sun exposure;
  • rinse and dry steel brushes after use to prevent rusting and clumping.

 

Fickert Brush:

The 140mm Fickert-style (or "Fickert mount") grinding brush is primarily used on automatic granite polishing machines, while the 170mm version is mainly used on automatic polishing machines for ceramic tiles and engineered quartz stone. Typically, each grinding head holds a set of six brushes.

A 170mm grinding head can accommodate 140mm brushes, but a head designed for 140mm brushes cannot accommodate 170mm brushes.

 

Frankfurt Brush:

Fruankfurt-style (Horseshoe-style) Abrasive Brushes are primarily used on automatic polishing machines for marble and terrazzo, or on floor polishing machines. Depending on the specific machine model, a single grinding head can typically hold 3, 4, 6, or 9 brushes.

 

Round-Shape Brush:

Round-shape(Circular-shape, disc-shape) Abrasive Brushes—such as the 4-inch and 5-inch versions—are primarily used with angle grinders and handheld polishers; they feature central mounting threads in M14, M16, or 5/8"-11 specifications, or utilize snail-lock or Velcro (hook-and-loop) attachments.

Larger sizes round brushes, such as 8-inch, 10-inch, and 15-inch brushes, are suitable for use with automatic grinding machines, semi-automatic walk-behind grinders, or floor renovation machines.

Q: Can steel wire antique brush be used on marble?

A: Not recommended. Hard steel wire will leave permanent deep scratches on soft carbonate marble, silicon carbide nylon brush is the correct choice for marble antiquing.

Q: What is the difference between antique brush and resin diamond polishing disc?

A: Resin diamond disc produces high mirror gloss; antique brush only creates matte brushed texture, they are used in different finishing stages and cannot replace each other.

Q: Can I use antique brush directly after metal bond rough disc?

A: Yes, but you need to match grit step by step, multiple fine grit brushes are required to get uniform soft satin surface.

Q: What’s the difference between fickert brush and frankfurt horse-shoe brush?

A: Fickert long strip brush fits automatic granite slab production lines for high-volume processing; Frankfurt horse-shoe brush is for marble polishing machines and small hand grinders. They cannot be interchanged on different equipment.

Q: Can fickert antique brush replace resin diamond fickert for mirror polishing?

A: No. Fickert abrasive brush only creates matte textured surface, it has no capacity to produce high mirror gloss, resin diamond fickert must be used before brushing step.
