Stone slabs refer to rectangular, standard-sized rough slabs sawn from raw blocks, typically in thicknesses of 18, 20, or 25 mm. They are primarily mass-produced using fully automated continuous polishing machines and undergo minor repair work to yield the finished stone slabs ready for sale.
Common stone slab polishing machines and tools
1 Fickert-Type Continuous Polishing Machine
- The grinding head base is designed for "Bula" grinding blocks, resulting in a smaller rotation radius for the grinding head.
- Advantages: Stable cutting force during rough grinding; a large installed base of older imported models exists, though most new machines now utilize the "Frankfurt" structure.
- Consumables: "Fickert"-specific grinding blocks with aluminum bases; while the dimensions match "Horseshoe" (Ma-ti) blocks, the mounting bases differ and are not interchangeable.
(Various type of Diamond Fickert are used for stone slabs grinding and polishing)
2 Frankfurt-style fully automatic continuous polishing machine
(featuring the world's most widely used grinding head design)
- Structure: Multiple grinding heads arranged in series (standard configurations include 12, 16, 20, and 24 heads); heads feature oscillating and rotating motions; conveyor belt feeds large slabs at a constant speed.
- Compatible Abrasives: Standard 140×70×20mm Frankfurt (horseshoe-style) abrasive blocks.
- Applications: Suitable for all flat slabs of granite, marble, quartz, and engineered stone; capable of producing high-gloss, matte, and antique finishes.
- Market Coverage: A standard machine model for 90% of domestic stone factories, as well as stone processing plants in Brazil, Turkey, and Southeast Asia.
(Diamond Frankfurt Abrasives are also important tools for stone slabs grinding and polishing)
3. Casani Imported Wide-Format Continuous Grinding Machine
- Italian design featuring an eccentric oscillating grinding head, delivering superior surface flatness and precision;
- Primarily used for high-standard export-grade large slabs and extra-wide/oversized slabs;
- Requires proprietary Casani grinding blocks (limited compatibility) and holds a small market share in China.

4. Bridge-type Multi-head Grinding Machine
(Small-to-medium batches, thick slabs, special materials)
- This machine operates without a conveyor belt; the large slab is placed on a stationary table while a gantry-mounted grinding head travels back and forth to polish the surface. It is suitable for oversized slabs, extra-thick engineered stone, and small-batch orders, though its production capacity is lower than that of a continuous production line.
Resin Bond and Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Discs are usually used on Single head manual or automatic polishing machine.
The standard polishing of stone slabs is divided into general high gloss slabs and matte antique slabs, with the Frankfurt fully automatic continuous polishing line as the reference; The process logic of Fickert-type and Casani-type mills is consistent, only the grinding block base is different.
